This M2 helmet has been restored to looks as if it might have been worn by a member of the 517th PIR during Operation Dragoon in Southern France 1944.
The 517th PIR wore one of the most distinctive U.S. helmets during the war. Prior to jump into Southern France it was discovered that there weren't enough para helmets to outfit the regiment. The riggers came up with this unique configuration. By taking straps and buckles from mountain packs the riggers fashioned a cloth chin cup that would serve as both the jump chin cup and chinstrap. The 517th PIR is the only unit known to have worn these this unique configuration. It is believed that maybe 3000 helmet with this confirmation were fashioned.
This helmet started life as a regular m1 front seam fixed bail helmet. The lot number on this helmet puts the production in 1943. New D-bails were spot welded into place to convert this shell into a M2. The helmet was totally stripped of post-war paint then recorked and repainted the correct shade of O.D. #3. The 5117th PIR chinstrap was made using original buckles and webbing. The strap was correctly bar tacked. The camo pattern on this helmet is also unit specific to the 517th PIR. The helmet was over-sprayed with black, grass green, and tan paint. The paint was directly sprayed over the 1/4 inch mesh net leaving this unique pattern.
The helmet comes fit with an original Westinghouse liner. The liner is 100% original with green coated washers. The liner likely dates to 1943. The double wire sweat band and chinstrap are new but have been aged to match the liner. The nape strap is also original and has nickel plated snaps.
The helmet has been aged to appear battle worn and original. The cork has compressed from age and handling. The camo pattern has faded in some spots. The finished has a slight dusty feel to it. The chinstrap has darkened with age.
An original 517th PIR helmet would sell for thousands. This is a great alternative for any U.S. Paratrooper enthusiast.

This M1 front seam fixed bail helmet was made by Schlueter manufacturing of St. Louis Missouri. Most M1 helmets were made by McCord radiator but in January of 1943 Schlueter manufacturing was awarded a contract to produce them as well. McCord made close to 20,000,000 shells, Schlueter only made about 2,000,000. This shell is not marked, which is typical of early Schlueter helmets. The way to tell that this shell was made by Schlueter is that the skirt slopes down further then a McCord. Since this helmet is a Schlueter fixed bail it was made between January 1943 and May of that same year.
The helmet has been restored to look like it might have been worn by a Medic or Field Surgeon. The helmet has been stripped of all post-war paint then re-corked and repainted the correct shade of O.D. #3. The Geneva crosses have been hand rendered onto the helmet and on the liner as well. This would have allowed the medic to wear the liner without the helmet in rear areas and field hospitals.
The liner was made by Firestone. The O.D. suspension is original and is P.K.W. marked, indicating it was made by Paul K. Weill company. The suspension is single weave which is what is found on early Firestone liner circa 1942-43. The A washers are green coated which is also standard for liner made in late 1942 and into 1943. The female snapes are United Carr marked. The nape strap is new, but has been aged to match the original web suspension. The liner chinstrap has the early green coated flat flip cam buckle.
The helmet have an original battle worn feel. Original M1 medic helmets are extreemly rare. This is your chance to have the next best thing for a fraction of the cost.
French M15 Adrian helmet, Infantry/Cavalry, size B (56 cm, 7 U.S.)

This is an original French WWI produced M15 Adrian helmet. The helmet has been totally stripped of all post-war paint then repainted the correct shape of early war Horizon Blue. This light shade of Horizon Blue however was used thought out the entire war. The inside of the dome has been ink stamped with the maker mark of Le Compagnie Colonial as was the French practice. The helmet come fit with the correct pig skin chinstrap, corrugated tin spacers and red brown early war liner. The liner wool is madder red as is often times seen on originals. The red wool would have been salvaged from the red trousers that the French army was wisely removing from service in 1915. The helmet is a size B, and should theoretically fit up to a size 58 hat size. That being said, due to the rounded shape of the dome French solider with oval heads would elongate the dome by banging the sides of the helmet with a blunt instrument. They also removed the spacers to give themselves a little extra room. This helmet is still round and was never messed with so if you have an oval shaped head and are a size 58 this helmet will not fit with the aluminum spacers. The helmet would comfortably fit a 56 cm or size 7 U.S. If you're a 58 cm, you can also remove the spacers if you wanted a little extra space too, just like they did back then. I can remove them for you by request. If you're a reenactor who wants a 100% correctly restored Adrian helmet, or you need the helmet worn by the brave defenders of Verdun, this is the helmet for you.
